Finally, Miranda Lanning, a recipient of the Reuben W. Hills II OHSU Medical Ambassador Program scholarship and Stacy Sprando, TFME Global health Ambassador Program scholarship recipient, conducted their study in Leon, Nicaragua within the Internal Medicine Emergency Department and Pediatric Department at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Nicaragua. During their time within the Emergency Department they learned a selection of fundamental techniques, like performing EKGs and arterial blood gas draws. One of the fascinating features they learned was the truth that when men and women come to the hospital emergency department, they expect to have procedures done, regardless of the appropriateness as related to their possible diagnosis. Additionally to volunteering within the Emergency Department, Stacy and Miranda conducted a medical records research project on the correlation of in-home accidents of youngsters 15 years and younger and socio-economic status by utilizing a specialized, comprehensive, history form designed by the government. They discovered many unexpected issues, as typically happen in research projects. One, the hospital medical records department had completed NO filing of charts for the year 2010. In addition, the form itself appeared to be too comprehensive for use within the emergency department where situations are typically critical and rushed. Furthermore, when interviewing mothers who normally brought the child to the ED, it was clear that living situations differed. In some situations there was not an in-home father and Stacy and Miranda intuited that perhaps the economic and employment data had been not accurate. Throughout their work in the ED Miranda and Stacy noted that staff was hungry for mini-in-services, which they occasionally conducted. Most importantly they viewed in-home safety education as critical to preventing the falls, burns, and cuts of the kids they had been seeing in the Emergency Department.
